Ventura High School student awarded BIRNS, Inc. Debra K. Geist Memorial Scholarship
OXNARD, CA—BIRNS, Inc., an Oxnard based manufacturer of unique lines of high performance lights and connectors for nuclear and marine markets, has awarded its annual Debra K. Geist Memorial Scholarship to Teague Towner of Ventura High School. At a recent ceremony at the company Towner received a certificate and an award of $500 to be used toward his collegiate studies.
The late Debra Geist was BIRNS’ Purchasing Agent for many years, before her sudden and tragic passing. In her memory, the company launched an annual college scholarship to encourage and recognize high school students in Ventura County with strong leadership potential, committed to the pursuit of excellence in a business career.
Towner submitted an exceptional application outlining his career and educational goals, his community involvement, and the legacy of entrepreneurship and hard work his family embraces. Towner is an honor student, and will be attending Grinnell College in Iowa in the fall. He is an American Legion’s Boy’s State Delegate, and has volunteered with the Assisteens Auxiliary Group for Ventura County, where he’s served as the Vice Chairman and Treasurer.
“I’m thrilled that we found such an outstanding and well qualified recipient for this year’s award,” says Eric Birns, President and CEO of BIRNS. “Mr. Towner is a wonderful example of leadership and academic achievement, and truly exemplifies the spirit of this scholarship.”
