BIRNS Awards 2014 Scholarship

OXNARD, CA—BIRNS, Inc., an Oxnard based manufacturer of unique lines of high performance lights and connectors for nuclear and marine markets, has awarded its annual Debra K. Geist Memorial Scholarship to Raquel Ortega of Rio Mesa High School. At a recent ceremony at the company, Ortega received a scholarship award of $500 to be used toward her collegiate studies.

The late Debra Geist was BIRNS’ Purchasing Agent for many years, before her sudden and tragic passing. In her memory, the company launched an annual college scholarship program. The program was founded to encourage and recognize high school students in Ventura County with strong leadership potential, committed to the pursuit of excellence in business career.

Ms. Ortega is an excellent student and active local volunteer who submitted a moving essay with her application, describing her dedication to helping her family, and her early commitment to entrepreneurialism. Ortega will continue her education at the University of Oregon, where she will major in Pre Business Administration in the Fall. Ortega has received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in the organization, the Optimist Youth Appreciation for Volunteering Award, and the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

“I’m thrilled that we found such an outstanding and well qualified recipient for this year’s award,” says Eric Birns, President and CEO of BIRNS. “Ms. Ortega sets a wonderful example of drive and passion for young entrepreneurs everywhere, which truly exemplifies the spirit of this scholarship.’’
